What is granite?

The term "granite" is used to cover a group of related stones, all of which have their origin deep in the earth's molten mantle. As this extremely hot liquid material rises and cools, it forms a crystalline, granular structure, hence the term granite. Granite and other granite-like stones are formed of hard minerals such as quarts, feldspar and mica, which are fused together into a very hard stone ideal for kitchen counters because its polish is resistant to household acids such as citrus and vinegar and is hard enough to resist scratching from knives and pots and pans.

What is marble?

Marble is a metamorphic rock. Its basic ingredient, Limestone, is a sedimentary form of calcium, which is found naturally in the earth. The Limestone undergoes intense heat and pressure within the earth to be formed into what we know as marble.

Marble, although beautiful and durable, is porous and easily destroyed by any type of acid. Marble requires more maintenance and it is recommended to use a good quality sealer on Marble countertops on a yearly basis.

What is quartz?

Quartz is a hard crystalline mineral which is found abundantly all over the Earth in a variety of forms. It is the most common mineral on Earth, making up 12% of the Earth's crust by volume, and is used in a wide variety of applications. Quartz slabs are artificially made using a complex manufacturing process. The majority of the slabs are made up of natural Quartz. A small percentage of resin & color pigments are used in order to shape the Quartz into slabs and add various colors to the mix.

What is travertino?

Travertino is a natural stone material from the limestone family. It is made of calcium carbonate and is usually found in the form of deposits near warm or hot springs. Because travertino is such a porous material, slabs are almost always filled in with cement or resin at the factories, prior to the polishing process. Travertino like marble also needs to be sealed on a regular basis.

Countertop Options

Granite is the traditional favorite kitchen counter top material for its unique colors and patterns, proven durability and lasting value. A Granite counter top is of course a natural stone that is heat, scratch and stain resistant and nearly impossible to damage if you follow some simple procedures for cleaning & maintaining the granite countertops. Granite is a good choice for any project inside or outside including walls and floors.

Engineered stone, or quartz counter tops are an excellent product manufactured from 93% quartz (which comes from granite) and a binding resin. Quartz is the relatively new kitchen countertop material famous for it's extremely uniform color palette.

Each countertop option has excellent and in many ways similar properties however they each excel in certain categories.

Granite excels in:

  • Heat resistance
  • Scratch resistance
  • Shine
  • Natural and extravagant color variations

Quartz excels in:

  • Flex resistance
  • Non Porous
  • Easy Maintenance
  • Uniformity of color and special colors that are not available in nature

Why is granite good for kitchen counters?

Because granite is very hard stone that's formed at very high temperatures deep in the earth, its polish is not subject to etching by household acids, or scratching by knives and pots and pans. It's unaffected by typical kitchen heat such as hot pans, or spilled liquid.

Can granite be damaged?

Like any solid surface, high impact blows can harm granite. Because of its crystalline structure, it can chip if subjected to sharp hard objects. Unsealed, granite can absorb stains such as oil, which can ultimately cause dark spots or discoloration. Heat from pots and pans or burning liquids will not affect granite under normal circumstances.

What is honed granite?

Granite is called "honed" when the polishing process is halted just before a reflective shiny surface is achieved. This gives a softer, matte appearance to the stone. Some fabricators can hone polished granite if they have special equipment to remove the polished surface, but this can sometimes result in wheel marks from the polishing head.

My little sample of granite has pits on the surface - will I have these on my kitchen counters?

Granite, which is crystalline in structure, always has tiny pits - spaces between the various mineral crystals. You don't see them on a larger piece because the overall appearance is polished and mirror-like. Granite sometimes has natural fissures as well, which may look like cracks, but are not structural defects and are a naturally occurring result of the immense heat and pressure which formed the granite eons ago. These characteristics are part of the natural beauty of stone and will not impair the function or durability of the material.

Where do you import your material from?

We import our slabs from Brazil, India and Italy which are the world's three largest granite slab producers and exporters. We have long standing relationships and work with several suppliers in each country many of which are owners / operators of quarries and have direct access to the raw material.

What are your opening hours?

Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. Saturday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. You may call us to take an appointment if you wish to come at any other day & time, including nights, weekends & holidays.

Can you refer me to a fabricator?

Unfortunately as a company policy, we do not refer homeowners to any fabricators. Mainly because we deal with almost all the fabricators in Montreal and surrounding arias, including Ottawa, Quebec City, Stanstead and Sherbrooke. We do not give any one fabricator preferential treatment in the form of referrals.

How do I get a quotation?

You can come & see the material we have in stock, after which you will have to contact your fabricator to get a quotation for your specific plan, using our specific slab. We do not provide any quotations, only your fabricator will be able to give you a quote for the job.

Why do you not sell to the public?

We are distributors and do not sell to the public, mainly because:
  1. We work on volume and deal with companies that purchase dozens of slabs per month.
  2. Special equipment and machinery is needed in order to manipulate the slabs and cut / polish the granite. The general public does not have access to this equipment & machinery.
  3. In order to transform slabs into countertops, special expertise and know how are required. Only professional experienced fabricators and/or designers/contractors who work with these fabricators possess these expertise and not home owners nor slab distributors.

Do you own your quarries?

No we do not! None of the slab distributors based in Montreal and even all of eastern North America own any of their own Granite quarries. Some distributors claim that they own their own quarries. They are not specific with what quarries they own and make it sound like they own quarries of all the granites & marbles that they have. This is just a ruse to mislead the consumer in thinking that they are something more than they actually are. They might own some obscure marble quarry in the middle east which produces colors that they don’t even carry! In any case, no slab distributor in eastern North America owns any granite quarries.
